Artist Statement

My current paintings explore psychological aspects of renewal of the human spirit. I express ideas of the natural environment as a source of nurture. Each work I make reflects an awareness for me of the importance of having time in nature to recenter myself. I make artworks inspired by landscape, and by human and animal biology. Contemporary and world art, popular science articles, and sacred art forms are some of my influences and sources that steer my work. Ancient devotional art, calligraphy, cartoons, graffiti, sculpture and textiles are also sources of inspiration for me. I apply ink and watercolor directly onto my surfaces, developing compositions over the course of weeks or months. My practice includes photographing local sky, natural light and landscape elements daily. These images become a source for light, line, form, color and content in my paintings. By combining gestural drawing, saturated color, and organic forms, I create lively and structured abstract artworks. Within these serious themes, I strive for an ebullience in my art that offers spiritual renewal.
