Benjamin Napolitano

Benjamin Napolitano is a Baltimore based artist working in a variety of media, concentrating on installation and video works exploring themes of analog technology, personal spirituality, and audience interaction. With a background in museum curation and visitor services, he is exploring the many ways in which the gallery context of a piece affects the audience’s impression of a piece and how this relationship can be integrated into large-scale works.

Private Devotion

This piece, Private Devotion, explores the interaction between historical institutions of religion and the queer community. Drawing on the visual language of the open tabernacle, the traditional focal point of catholic faith and an archive of personal ads placed by queer people in the late 20th century, it seeks to create a connection and sense of emanation from the tabernacle to the projection, involving and intertwining the two private, anonymous experiences of faith and sexuality together.
