Introducing “Apparitions & Manifestations”

A Solo Exhibition by Dan Schlapbach

"‘We do not see things as they are, we see them as we are.” Anaïs Nin

"The most beautiful experience we can have is the mysterious. It is the fundamental emotion that stands at the cradle of true art and true science. Whoever does not know it and can no longer wonder, no longer marvel, is as good as dead, and his eyes are dimmed.” The World As I See It, Albert Einstein

The Seeping, 2023, Relievo Ambrotype

Photography professor and visual manifester, Dan Schlapbach created our current exhibition, Apparitions & Manifestations to challenge viewers to think about the mystery of consciousness in relation to our interpretation of the senses. What happens when we look at a photograph of a flower? Our senses allow us to see the flower in its entirety. The stem, petals, and leaves send signals to the brain which we construct and interpret as a photograph of the literal object. But what happens when we go beyond our initial perception? Our consciousness allows us to see other things. Perhaps we see a face, or two dancing girls. Our consciousness shifts from literal interpretation to something beyond our wildest imagination. This is at the core of Schlapbach’s exhibition.

Schlapbach challenges us to see objects in new ways. What happens when our ordinary interpretation of objects creates new meanings? The arrangement of objects and photographs allows us to use our imagination to see the unexpected. In Schlapbach’s exhibition, photographs and ambrotypes are arranged in linear lines and some are even presented as diptychs which allows the viewer to think about the objects in relation to one another. This arrangement of objects distills curiosity and explores the mystery of consciousness. We begin to turn mundane images we see into fascinating objects we can manifest.

The exhibition will run from January 17th- February 12th 2023. Missed the artist's talk? View it here!
