Artist Statement

The atmospheric distances found in deep landscape have always drawn me in—I love the subtlety of color, the softness of edges, and the ambiguity of hills that are far out of reach. For more than two decades I have considered landscape to be a spiritual space. These paintings represent two bodies of work, each exploring spirituality and an attempt to seek silence. In the “Beyond” series, land, sky, and water all merge into one, and the color is so quiet that time (and focus) is required of the audience. In “Through” and “Above,” I utilize the same shifting color and light as in the earlier series, but with a white window into an open space. At second glance, the solidity of the window functions as a shape, which then flips the spatial relationship. In all of these painted explorations there is an acceptance of spatial ambiguity, and a feeling of serenity in the unknown.
