She has shown in museums and art centers across the US. Lorio’s work shows her strong interest in the concept of repetition and sequencing in the natural world but is nonrepresentational in content. The design concepts in her art reflects her interests in tribal cultures, spiritual belief systems, the natural world, and science. She sees spiritual theory and science compatible. Patterns link the universe together. Upon close viewing, her paintings, which are comprised of small specks or shapes, create the impression one would have if looking through a microscope or perhaps looking down to earth from an aircraft. She reflects on the spiritual as well as the concrete implications of her work and allows the viewer to come the their own conclusions.
The Delaware Division of Art Fellowship is one of Diane Lorio’s accolades. She had a one person show at Abington Art Center Philadelphia PA that lasted for 6 months. In her career she received an Artist in Schools residency in Greensboro, NC, Individual Artist Fellowship for the state of Michigan, and a Race Street Residency in Grand Rapids MI with Studio Space among numerous prizes from competitions and gallery shows. She has produced commissions for both public, and corporate spaces throughout her career.
This prize will allow Lorio to further her career by investing in supplies and equipment for her studio. She will focus on making new works as well as matting, framing, and crating existing pieces for future shows
Artist Statement
Diane Lorio upholds a tradition of abstract painting that embodies the spiritual realm within art. Her paintings convey the dynamism inherent in the spaces between the physical and metaphysical dimensions. These spaces, as postulated by contemporary physics, are permeated by pivotal interactions between the world’s most minute particles. These spatial energies serve as a source of inspiration for her artistic practice. She infuses her work with intense patterns and frenetic movement. She redefines how particles traversing the air we breathe, the water we consume, and the earth we live on intermingle with our bodies. Lorio perceives individuals as smaller components of a larger universe, originating from particles. Similarly, the cosmos encompasses a macrocosm surpassing our own. Her work expresses a unique manifestation of the universal energy that harmoniously exists among all particles, devoid of judgment. Vibrant color and intricate patterns drive her exploration of the dynamic negative and positive spaces, connecting the viewer to the artwork on a profound level.
