Edna Kurtz Emmet
My clay sculptures dwell in the threshold between outer appearance and inner life—the face as a surface, and the unseen pressures that shape it from within. They serve as bridges between the visible world and the inner forces that animate us. By merging human features with animal forms, I draw upon mythological associations, allowing animals to embody aspects of our hidden potential and spiritual character.
In ancient traditions we attribute to animals’ human qualities of character. I combined the human countenance crowned by an animal form. The face as mask and mirror of emotions, intentions, selfhood and the animal as embodiment of our potential. In the back which is the negative mold of the face as if looking from within the qualities of the animals are scribed. These sculptures are to be viewed in the round, revealing shifting perspectives from every angle.
