Greta Brooks
Greta Brooks is a portrait and documentary photo and film-based artist living and working between New York City and Baltimore. Her work is rooted in a deep fascination with people, their stories, their emotions, and the quiet, unguarded moments that define human connection. Through her lens, Greta seeks to capture the beauty of authenticity and the pulse of everyday life, transforming the ordinary into something cinematic and emotionally charged. Greta’s practice continues to evolve as she experiments with analog and digital mediums, exploring how film and photography can bridge memory, identity, and place. Her goal is to build a career that allows her to share meaningful stories through visual art—inviting viewers to not only see her work but feel it along with her.
“Woven Congruency” from Baltimore Dwelling
During my time at Loyola University Maryland, I’ve had the wonderful opportunity to explore and engage with the city of Baltimore in ways that were both personal and observational. This body of work however focuses on four neighborhoods—Hampden, Roland Park, Mt. Vernon, and Homeland. It is framed by my own experiences navigating each one as a student and the history of these neighborhoods, both an exploration of place, people, and memory. I am constantly inspired by the works of documentary photographers like Robert Frank and environmental portrait photographers such as Arnold Newman.
Photographing these environments became an act of quiet observation in noticing traces of care, neglect, pride, and personality embedded within homes. Through this series I hope to offer a nuanced portrait of Baltimore, one that highlights the subtle contrasts and harmonies between them. Although people appear in and out of the frames, their presence is deeply felt. These outdoor spaces become extensions of their inhabitants and reflect not just who lives there, but how they live and choose to connect with their surroundings. Each panel invites viewers to pause and notice what often goes unseen and acknowledge the diversity, care, and individuality present in the homes and backyards that make up the fabric of Baltimore.
