Curving Spirit, 8" x 10", Acrylic paint on canvas

Artwork Description

Lines were drawn with a pencil to make shapes on canvas, which were then painted deliberately with each color. The shapes of color are not free-flowing, but grow and shrink in different areas. The contrast between squeezing and expanding shapes relates to the expression of our own identities, choosing where we shine and take up more space or choosing when to shrink and hide. The painting is a direct result of the artist's own frustration and confusion surrounding her identity, and in which areas of her life she can be herself and where she has to hide.
