in memoriam, Four 6” x 9” paper casts, Recycled paper casts

Artwork Description

This piece is comprised of four paper casts, which were made from different combinations of recycled paper pulp that were pressed into a linoleum carving. To create the carving, I referred to a photo of myself before I got top surgery. I wanted to honor that past version of my body, because despite my gender dysphoria, I knew my body was just following the genetic code it had been given. It was also incredibly cathartic to carve the design out of the linoleum block. The final effect showed that catharsis in the harsh lines, while also mimicking the striations of muscle fibers that you see in medical diagrams.
