Unraveling Us, 60 × 18”, Watercolor and thread on paper

Artwork Description

This piece examines intimacy at the moment it begins to unravel. Two women appear in an embrace, but as the work opens, they grow farther apart—no longer holding each other, only a single red thread tethered to an exposed heart within one figure. The other raises a pair of scissors, poised to sever the connection. The thread becomes both lifeline and liability, symbolizing devotion strained by distance and fractured by betrayal. Created in response to the end of a long-distance relationship, the work captures the suspended moment before finality—the breath before the cut—when love still exists, but no longer equally. Through tension and vulnerability, the piece asks: when does holding on become its own form of heartbreak?
